Safety and security encompasses a wide range of applications from cybersecurity to physical security to financial market security. The common analytical thread across these applications is anomaly detection. That is, a baseline of “normal” activity is identified and then new events (e.g., computer network log events) are evaluated and flagged as normal or abnormal (an anomaly). While security experts have a long track record of identifying anomalies, the volume of events, the frequency of those events, and the number of potential leading indicators of an anomaly are growing too big for any expert or team of experts to analyze manually. Most importantly, safety and security experts need transparency into why something is flagged to reduce their investigation time and build their case to take action.
